Phil Grabsky’s film follows a year in the troubled life of the unique Music School of Luanda the capital of Angola and one of the world's poorest and most dangerous places. Following three central characters this film reveals not only their struggle with their country's war-ravaged past but also their musical passion and ambition.The three characters are:Joana whose ambition is to be Angola’s first female rock drummer divorced her disapproving husband so she could be free to attend the school. Domingas (who is in her forties) a pianist also left her husband and regularly goes hungry so she can bring up her five children while attending the school. The talented and ambitious classical pianist Alfredo who has to prove to his religious father that a career in music is not ridiculous in post-war Angola. ESCAPE FROM LUANDA will follow the diverse entertaining and moving lives of these (and some secondary) characters as they all work their way towards the all important end-of-year Independence Day show. As they polish their pieces and push their talents to new levels we will also go behind the scenes to investigate their family situations and backgrounds.
